The difference between socket welded pipe fittings and butt welded pipe fittings

02.26.2024

Socket welded pipe fittings are generally used for small pipe diameters less than or equal to DN40, which are more economical. Butt welded pipe fittings are generally used for pipes with diameters above DN40. So what are the differences between socket welded pipe fittings and butt welded pipe fittings?

1. Electric welding of socket welded pipe fittings produces fillet welds, while butt welding produces butt welds. Judging from the analysis results of welding strength and support conditions, butt welding is better than socket connection. Therefore, butt welding should be used in places with generally high pressure requirements.

2. Most of the pipes with lower pressure levels and smaller sizes use socket welded pipe fittings. Those with high pressure levels generally use butt welded pipe fittings. After butt welding of welded pipe fittings and stainless steel pipes, flaw detection tests must be carried out to ensure there is no leakage.

3. Socket welding means inserting stainless steel pipes into socket welded pipe fittings for electric welding. Butt welding means that the branch pipes and pipe fittings are directly welded relative to each other. Generally, the requirements for butt welding are higher than those for socket welding. The quality of welding is good, but the inspection method is relatively strict. Butt welding requires radiographic testing, and socket welding penetration testing is sufficient. If the fluid mechanics in the pipeline do not have high requirements for electric welding, it is recommended to use socket welded pipes for easy inspection.

4. Advantages of socket welded pipe fittings: There is no problem of making welds; there is no problem of whether they are aligned and on the wrong side; the electric welding part can be adjusted to flat welding.
